Arriving in Johannesburg
After a long Flight from Toronto ON Canada I finally made it to Johannesburg South Africa. I was greeted by my amazing friend from the ships Lucy, with a big sign and of course the South African Scarf. We made our way from the airport to her sisters place where I would be staying, with a small stop at the liquor store. Tonight was going to be a welcome party with many more friends from the ship days.
Time For a Braai (BBQ)
This is another reason I travel, FOOD!!!! Let me tell you I love eating so when they said Braai I was in. I knew from all the talks on ships that this was a must do in South Africa. Lucy did tell me this was not the way a true Braai was but I was happy with it either way. The one thing you do need to experience here is this. ome backpackers and hostels will offer this.
Taking a Trip to the Country Side
Time to get out of the city and head out to where Lucy lived. A small town about an hours drive away. To my surprise we stopped at Croc and Lion Ranch in Deneysville the admission is reasonable and food was ok. This is where I fell in love, with a baby lion of course. Never ever did I think I would get to touch one, never mind hold a baby lion. All the animals from what I could tell were very well cared for. Even if you didn’t want to go here, the drive alone is worth it.
My feelings on Joburg
Now I am not a big city person as you will see. I like the rural areas but I will say it is a beautiful city. It is not a place I would travel alone to. I did not feel safe at times even in a group. Johannesburg is the city you fly into to get to your safari and fly straight out of. I didn’t explore a lot of the city only because after the 2nd night there I did not feel safe and the crime in that area towards women is high. So if you are planning on travelling here alone please keep that in mind.
