Mike Coots said “There are a millon ways to surf, and as long as you’re smiling you’re doing it right.” and he was not wrong. I can go out and get up on every wave or none at all and will still have a smile on my face.
I love being out there, getting up on a wave and for that 30 seconds to a minute is just blissful. Learning to surf is truly not hard if you have the right place and right instructor.
Most people think that surfing started in Hawaii, but they would not be correct. It actually started in Tahiti and I cannot wait to go there. For now, here is my list of the best places to learn to surf.
Hawaii
Surfing is Hawaii goes back to the 4th century a.d. by 1779 Polynesians were riding the waves on long hardwood boards. This is not where it began but it is where it grew.
Kona is the first place I tried to surf. The Kona Surf Company was amazing and I had no problems getting up on my first wave. The instructors here was for informative and patient. I would recommend them for not only beginners but for those seeking a more experienced tour.
Maui is another great place for those just starting out. Maui Wave Riders are a great group and give lessons for all ages and all levels. Getting my good friend out there with me was such a great experience.
Costa Rica
Jaco Beach is by far my favorite place to surf. The water is warm, the waves set out enough and the surf guides are great. And to top it off, no sharks! If you are heading here look up Surf Factory
Portugal
Lagos at the southern end of Portugal is another great place. We were here during storm Emma so the water was rough, but we still had a great time. Our instructor Filipe at Fil Surf School was amazing and hospitable.
Fun fact, Portugal is home to the highest wave ever surfed.
South Africa
Jeffrey’s Bay has some great waves and is home to the super tubes. Now yes I did get injured during my surfing here but the group I was with also had an amazing time learning. WavecrestSurf School was a great surf school and I cannot thank Andrew enough for taking care of me during that time.
More places that I will one day be.
- Australia
- Morocco
- Tahiti
- Fiji
- Tonga
- Indonesia
Choosing the right surf school
When planning your first or second or even third time you should always do your research.
Read the reviews on forums, facebook, google and any other place you can find unbiased comments. If it is not a busy time ask the locals.
If you are traveling during peak seasons make sure you book ahead just so you are not disappointed to find out they are booked.
