Relaxing at Ubuntu Backpacker

Ubuntu Backpacker, this place was a surfers and backpackers paradise. Laid back and chilled from the moment you step through the door. Great atmosphere, with music playing in the background, I’m certain it was Bob Marley. I had met Anne, and her now husband James, on the bus ride to Storms River. They weren’t going to stay at this place but I talked them into it. I’m sure they were happy about the decision. There we met Rob, a fellow Canadian and a bubbly young girl from South America.

The Place of Super Tubes and Torn Dreams

Jeffreys Bay surfing
Jeffreys Bay after leg injury.

I love to surf, and it was why I came to Jefferys Bay, Supertubes. No, I am no pro, I still take lessons till this day. I have been to 5 places around the world just to be out on that board. This was my first accident surfing. I got the courage after a little while with the group and wondered off on my own. After a few attempts getting up I felt a really sharp pain in my leg. I was sure I was just bit by a shark. Thankfully I was not but I knew something was wrong so I laid on the board and made my way to shore.

As I army crawled up the beach I could see Andrew the instructor making his way to me. I told him I might have pulled something and I started to laugh, it was better than crying. I tried to get up but there was no way. And so the embarrassing had to happen, a stretcher off the beach. After getting to the hospital I found out I had a partial tear in my calf, which was good news, no surgery. Bad news, I was now on crutches the rest of my trip. Anne was such a life saver. Not only did she stop surfing and come to the hospital with me she also hung out with me for the last 2 days. Andrew Moon at Wavecrest surfing school, you are a great man. If you want to learn to surf, check out Andrew and his wife Libby and their bros.

Helping a broken girl

Words can’t describe the feeling you get when a group of strangers go out of their way to help you. Some people will say people at backpacker places are bums and just a bunch of hippies. I will tell you this, still in my late 30’s I will stay at a backpackers. They, no matter age, race or religion will always be there. This group was no different. To all of you, I am truly grateful for your hospitality and friendship.
