Explore the Shores and Forts in Puerto Rico

PUERTO RICO

Puerto Rica fort

Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico back in 2017. Puerto Ricans have built it backup and still not at %100 they have made it clear that they will work hard to bring tourism back to this beautiful Island.

Old San Juan is one of the more historical places to visit in Puerto Rico. It is also one of the top cruise ports as it offers great shopping, scenic places within walking distance and cute cafes.

The best time to visit Puerto Rico is mid-April to June. Also read my guide on Puerto Rico Vs Costa Rica.

Old San Juan

Old San Juan has so much history dating back to the 1500’s. Cobble stone streets lined by vibrant colored buildings. There are many historical buildings in Old San Juan. Catedral de San Juan which was built in 1521 but has been destroyed by two hurricanes and rebuilt. El Morro, a fort that has protected San Juan from many attacks from foreign powers. Cappilla de Cristco which was a built after a driver during a race went over the cliff. This driver survived and it is said the built this to either stop another person from going over or as a blessing that the driver lived. La Princesa which is now home to the tourism offices but was a former prison built in 1837.

El Morro

El Morro is a citadel located at the north part of the city. Here it has stood many battles and has protected San Juan over decades. Admission is  $3 for an adult. Once you enter you can find tour guides in Spanish and English every hour. Or wonder the area on your own with a guide map. The upper level which you can see the lighthouse built in 1908 as well as the vents to the lower levels. From this area you will have great views over looking the bay as well as the cemetery. Down to the lower levels you will find cannon battery and a little further down you will find corridors and living areas.

Capilla de Cristo

Capilla de Cristo was built in 1753 after a driver during the San Juan Bautista festival went over the cliff. Many locals and world travelers come here to give prayer to the saints for miracles after that same driver survived going over.

Where to eat

Puerto Rico

Princesa GastroBar is a fine dining establishment located near El Morro. I loved coming here even if it was just for dessert. Give me a place that has trees wrapped in lights and I am hooked. Even though it is fine dining the prices are reasonable.  My choice was the firewood grilled chicken breast, however my friend had the rack of lamb and loved it. Want to just get an appetizer go with the eggplant and codfish dip.

Cafe and Yogurt

Puerto Rico

Frosenyo & Zombie Coffee is a great place to grab one of the best frozen yogurts and also a great coffee. The purple building pulls you in but the service and amazing yogurt keep you coming back for more.

Puerto Rico Adventure Seekers

National Park Puerto Rico

Take a day hike to El Yunque National Forest. I love to escape the city and immerse myself into greenery. This national park is not easy to get to by public transportation but rent a car and make the journey, you won’t be disappointed. You will not be able to cover everything in one day or a week. The waterfalls are stunning and if you want to get the adrenaline going try the ziplining.

Safety and Overall Review

I worked on cruise ships and only had one overnight here. Puerto Rico is a safe country. San Juan has it’s problems like any other city with petty thief. We did walk around at night but stayed to the main streets. As it is a big tourist spot there is a lot of police which makes you feel safer. Just be smart and stick to well lit areas at night.
