Where is Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the 7 Wonders of the World and is located in the Andes mountains of Peru. Built around the mid 15th century these stunning ruins bring visitors by the millions from around the world. Here is where you will find the Machu Picchu circuits.

Did Machu Picchu change their circuits again in 2024?

Yes, Machu Picchu has changed their circuits again. We had visited in May 2024 and at that time they only had 4. Now, you can choose from 10. I will be honest, I think this will do so much more to help preserve this site. However, with that being said, you will now have to choose 2 or more if you want to see everything.

Here is a breakdown of the circuits

I’m going to explain each circuit and at the end I will tell you which ones I think are the best for your buck. There are 10 circuits within 3 groups. Group 1 gives you access to the upper terrace. Group 2 gives you a portion of the upper and a portion of the lower. Group 3 is primarily the lower. Each of these groups have routes and I’m going to explain each one below.

Circuit 1A Machu Picchu Mountain Route

c1a

With this circuit you will get the classic photo over looking the citadel. This as includes the hike up Machu Picchu Mountain. You do not get to venture into the urban area below.

Circuit 1B Upper Terrace Route

c1b

This is not a circuit I would recommend. You get the classic photo op and that is it. This is for people who are just here for that Instagram photo. Yes, you will get to look at the citadel but that is all.

Circuit 1C Ruta Portada Intipunku (Sun gate Route)

c1c

I wish they had this route when we went to visit. I would have loved to do this hike. The Sun Gate is where those who do the Inka trail will arrive. The views from here are amazing. You also get access to the upper terrace.

Circuit 1D Inka Bridge Route

c1d

This is a route I would recommend. The trail to the Inka Bridge was amazing with stunning views. We did this with a guide and it was amazing to hear the history of this spot. You also get the iconic photo on the upper terrace.

Circuit 2A Classic Route Designed

c2a 1

This is probably the only one that is closest to the old versions. This one here gives you the postcard picture on the upper terrace as well as access to the citadel. You will see most of the urban area as well as Temple of Condor which I really loved.

Circuit 2B Lower Terrace Route

c2b

This is similar to 2A. The only big difference is the area to which you take the picture from the terrace. The picture above is what you will get, and to honest, I think it’s a much nicer picture. You will get the overview of the citadel as get to venture into as well.

Circuit 3A Wayna Picchu Mountain

c3a

This circuit will not allow you to take the famous postcard picture but you will get amazing views from the top of Wayna Picchu Mountain. This is not the trail for those afraid of heights. It’s also known as Huayna Picchu Mountain. Before you book your ticket make sure to watch a video of this hike. I couldn’t do it so I went with the baby mountain instead.

Circuit 3B Royale Designed Route

c3b

This is a route if you just want a glimpse at the site. I would say this is for those with mobility issues or those with no time. You will only get to see a portion of the lower terrace. In my opinion, it’s not worth the money.

Circuit 3C Great Cavern Route

c3c

This was not an option for us when we went. From what I can see this is something you would stop at if going up Wayna Picchu Mountain. This is something I would definitely want to check out if and when I return. You will also get a good portion of the lower terrace.

Circuit 3D Huchuy Picchu Mountain

c3D

This was another hike we took here on our second day. There are no words for this view. You will get to wonder the lower terrace and climb the baby mountain. Don’t let baby mountain confuse you, this is still a scary hike, at least for me. I’m not a fan of heights and yes, I did cry a little when I got to the top. I was so proud of myself and the views here were worth every tear.

What trail is best for you?

This is just my opinion and it will truly depend on what you came to see. Now that the circuits have changed, it will be hard to see the whole place without going on 2 or 3. I think the following 2 are the best to get a really good experience.

If you can do 2 while visiting Machu Picchu. For the upper view I would pick either 1A or 1D. These will give you the iconic postcard picture and a great hike. To explore the lower area I would suggest 3A, 3C or 3D. which will give you great views from a different angle.

If you only have one day I would suggest 2A or 2B. These both will give you a great photo overlooking the Citadel and you will get to explore the main area.

If you are stuck for time or mobility I would suggest 1B for the photo op and 3B if you want to explore the lower area and are not able to move around as easily.

Things to know before you go.

Plan ahead – If you are wanting to see everything Machu Picchu has to offer you will want to book 2 circuits. Get one that explores the upper portion and one for the bottom.

Book it months in advance – Do not wait till last minute or your trip might be for nothing. I would suggest booking 6 – 8 months in advance during busy season.

Bring a raincoat – Be prepared for rain. January, February, March, October, November and December are rainy season. Even during dry season you could see some showers during the day. Umbrellas are not allowed.

Selfie sticks – These are not allowed inside. So if you are travelling alone, just politely ask someone to take that amazing shot.

Large bags – You are only able to bring a small backpack. They do have lockers for those travelling with large bags or luggage.

Food – You are not supposed to bring food in. Although we did see people eating inside, picnic like, they will ask you to leave. Please make sure to bring your garbage out with you.

Water – it is humid and you will be walking a lot. Make sure to bring lots of water with you.

Sunscreen – Be prepared when it’s not raining to put on some sunblock.

Altitude sickness – you are 7972 feet, 2430 meters, above sea level. Be aware there is a possibility you could fall ill if you did acclimate correctly.

Final thoughts

I loved it here and would love to do the Inca trail one day. Machu Picchu is one of the 7 wonders of the world for a reason, it’s a beauty!
