Rio Secreto is like walking down into another world. Take a step back in history as you make your way on foot or swimming through this magical cave.
Rio Secreto is located near Playa del Carmen. If you are in Cozumel it’s a ferry ride over or if you are in Cancun it is about an hour drive.
My friend Brian and I got the opportunity to check out a new tour we were doing. I never say no to try something new and exciting.
Upon arriving you are asked to get into your swimwear and shower. The reason for the shower to to get as much oil and salt from your body. The oils and salts we produce destroy the thousand and million year old stalactites and stalagmites.
After a brief and informative lesson from our guide we make our way into the cave. They provide the wetsuits, helmet, life vest and head torch.
After a short walk we made our way into the water. It is not warm so be prepared. You do warm up as you move along. Taking in everything at this moment was a lot, I wanted to sit here for a while to absorb it all. This place is truly beautiful.
This portion of the tour was a little hard for me as I wanted to touch everything. Please keep your hands off, just as I did. All I could think of was the time it takes to create on and I didn’t want to be responsible for ruining it.
As the cavern starts to open more and the area becomes more lit it is incredible to see what lies under the ground. I am truly in awe of what I am witnessing. Here is where I knew I wanted to see more of these around the world.
Half way through the expedition the group stopped in an area where we could touch the ground, and lights out. Yup my heart was racing as I could not see a thing. It took a moment to calm myself and when I was relaxed I took it all in. The sounds of drops hitting the water. Critters moving around. It was incredible just for that moment to have nothing but your hearing.
Daylight at last. We made our way up a small rock formation as our guide was explaining to us where we were. And to get a great photo
To my friend Brian, once again this was a fantastic voyage with you. These moments in life you never forget.
