Skagway
The small town of Skagway is by far my favorite. I think it’s because of the old time feel to it. That and the population is around 1000 people under the cruise ships arrive. Most people only come here the way of ship giving you about 8 hours to explore. If that is the case here are some things to keep in mind.
My Top 3 Things To Do
Skagway is one of the stops for most if not all the cruise lines. Here are a list of activities you can do while here.
- Hiking the Chilkoot Trail, Dewey Lake Trail, Upper Reid Falls- If you are staying for a few days these are a must. The Lower Dewey Lake trail is a 3 mile loop with medium difficulty. The upper Dewey Lake is a 5 mile loop and also Medium difficulty. The lower Reid Falls and Icy lake is a 4 hour hike about 7 miles and the beginning was difficult unsteady hike but the rest was a walk in the park. I didn’t get the chance to do the Chilkoot trail or to see the upper Reid falls but I did hear both were incredible.
- White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad – Take a relaxing train ride up to the mountains and the Yukon Post. The scenic route with waterfalls, tunnels and amazing bridges is one for the books. This is great for all ages.
- Canoe to a Glacier – This was an experience like no other. Making our way by canoe to the majestic Davidson Glacier. You truly feel small being near it. At one point as the instructor was talking a small chunk fell down into the water and it was a sound I will never forget. Loud, rumbling, terrifying. You are close enough to get hurt but close enough for your heart to race.
Things to Bring with you on your Excursion
You don’t get to pack much on your Cruise vacation but when coming to Alaska you need to have a backpack and proper foot wear. Also things to have are whistle, yes there are bears. Since you can’t bring bear spray with you, this is the next best thing. Don’t forget to pack a couple small snacks and lots of water. And number one, don’t forget your camera, the views are amazing throughout the trails.
The best backpack I have found for day trails or evening over night is the Mountaintop Back Pack. It is easy to lay flat in your suitcase, it is lightweight and best of all it is comfortable. Trust me these trails are not easy so you want something that won’t strain your back.

Top 5 Places to Eat in Skagway
One thing I love to do is eat and Skagway is home to some of the best places I have ate. Everything from Beer battered fish, to pizza and of course fudge for dessert.
- Skagway Fish Company, beer battered fish
- Red Onion Salon, pizza and some old time entertainment (Brothel, the ladies still dress up)
- Bonanza Bar & Grill, great burgers
- The Station Bar & Grill, wings ( I don’t eat them but everyone I was with said they were amazing)
- Alaskan Fudge Company ( Klondike No-Nut )
