The road to Hana is by far the best attraction in Maui. Beware though if you do get car sick this will not be pleasant for you. The road to Hana is 52 miles long but takes 2 hours without stops. Now you can do the drive there and back from Kahului in about 5 hours, but you will want to stop on the way for pictures and just to take it in.
There are 620 curves and 59 bridges along this journey. Each one will have something to look at. Picking the right driver and taking turns is the best way to make it.
Here are some of the places we stopped at along the way. And although we were on a time crunch we made the most of it.
First Stop Twin Falls
About 30 minutes into your drive you will see on the right side Twin Falls. This is a great first stop to get out at and stretch your legs, even grab a really good smoothie. You will park up at the road and walk down to the falls.
Now if you see the parking lot is full don’t worry. Most people get to the first set of waterfalls and leave. There are a few and the end one is worth it.
Now if you are crunched for time this is still a must stop at and trust me you will still have time. I have heard this place is not well known on the highway but trust me you will want to stop. Even if it is to prepare yourself for the road ahead.
Next stop Keanae
About 14 miles after Twin Falls you will come to the small town of Keanae. This is another picturesque spot. Known for its Tora fields you will also come across jagged lava rocks with waves crashing over them. This is another great place to get out and stretch and take some pictures.
Upper Waikani Falls
Time to cool off. 3 miles up the road you will see Upper Waikai Falls. It is a triple waterfall and they are stunning. Even if you just want to stop take a picture soak your feet it is worth it.
Black Sand Beach
This stretch was a little longer. About 13 miles up the road you will come to Turn left onto Honokalani Rd and then left onto Waianapanapa Rd. Follow to the end and park. You will find black sand beach and an amazing sea cave here. There is also Honokalani Cemetery which is built out of volcanic rock and coral.
Hana
We made it to the town of Hana. Was it worth it, yes! This drive as much as it is crazy it was amazing. I can only thank Jeanette for this great trip as she was our driver. Like I said in the beginning, if you can switch drivers do so. I know Jeanette had a great time I just wish she could have seen more.
