Boston had two Seasons, August and Winter – Billy Herman
So now off to Boston MA, how did we decide this one, well the food of course and Fenway Park, but mainly the food. I was in need of some good clam chowder and that is something Central Canada does not have.
And this time we have a third person. Eden, yes like the garden, found out about our last trip and she wanted in on the next. So we booked our trip for August. The amazing thing about Boston is the history. I am not a city person but I do love taking a trip back in time.
So once again an early morning flight out Saturday and we are off. We arrived one big purse with us because at this point we still have not discovered our “spirit bag”. Yes spirit charges you for carryon or luggage and I’m frugal. We arrived and took a cab to the city center.
A walk in the Park
Our cab driver picked us up and on the way gave us a history lesson. This was a highlight for me as you know I love learning about the past. He dropped us off downtown and we made our way to find some Java. After getting a much needed coffee from a cute little hipster place we made our way to the park. Once again people watch, and get a good laugh at the ducks with their butts in the air.
Cheers
Finally it was time to make our way to Cheers for some beer and grub. Anyone my age loved this show, so I was surprised when I walked in it wasn’t like what I had seen tv. Turns out there are two sets that they used, but don’t let that discourage you from going, it was an amazing experience and the food to great.
So sad that this place is closing if not closed by now. I truly was a once in a life time experience but I will head back to this city to see what other places I can enjoy.
Boston Hotel Buckminster
After finishing up a we decided to head to the hotel which was a little ways away, but didn’t mind walking as it burned off the calories from our delicous meal. We chose to stay at the Boston Hotel Buckminster for a couple reasons, it was close to Fenway Park and it was on the subway line which made things easier to get around. This hotel has some of the best History, it was one of the first hotels in Boston, the hotel was involved in the Black Sox scandal and is said to be haunted, which I do believe is true. We got check in and it was time to get ready for the ball game.
PLAY BALL!!!!!
Take me out to the ball game. This was such a fantastic night, did I watch the game, probably, but thanks to a lot of drinks, I don’t remember much🤦♂️ We had our shirts made by Vicious Vinylz and got so much attention, again, who doesn’t love Canadians. After the game we went back to the hotel and stopped at Uno for some more drinks, why, because you can’t drink too much on a girls weekend.
Freedom Trail
After some much needed coffee that morning and a few laughs, we headed out of the hotel. It was time we made our journey along The Freedom Trail. This is a 2.5 mile route connecting you to 16 historical sites. Each one with a story. Park Street Church dating back to 1809 with a 217 foot steeple. Right next to the Church was Granary Burying Ground. At the front gate stood a young man that hands you a booklet. Inside it describes the meaning behind some of the stones as well as a history to the grounds. The Old Corner bookstore was a few blocks away, which was one of my favorite buildings. There was so many historical sites along the marked way. This is the one touristy thing I would say you should do when visiting. After lunch we made our way down to the waterfront.
Georges Island
With much of the day still left, we decided to take a ferry from the Long Wharf Pier over to Georges Island. The Island is home to Fort Warren which was built to protect Boston. If you are into history you would love the structures here. The Fort started it’s construction in 1833 and took nearly 2 decades to complete. This place was used during the Civil War, serving as a training facility for Union soldiers. It also functioned as a prison for Confederate officers and government officials during the Civil War. The fort held a number high ranking civilians, including Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens and Confederate Postmaster General John Reagan.

Dinner Time and the Reason I came to Boston
The main reason I came to Boston was for the clam chowder. I was not at all disappointed. We made our way to The Oyster House on Union St not far from the Pier. Walking in here felt like you were taking a step back in time. The old style booth seating with the old man in the sea look, and the smell of the days ocean catch. The service was great but the food was even better.
Eden had the oysters, Jodi and I let her enjoy those on her own, we are not fans. Jody had a sandwich and fries and I of course had not one but 2 bowls of CHOWDER. I tried to get Jodi to order it but she wanted no part. When my first bowl came I had her try, she was hooked, line and sinker. When I ordered my second bowl she to decided she needed one. After the meals were finished she asked me if she was ruined, the answer, yes. There is no place back home that makes it this good. To be honest, I’m happy, as it will be another reason to come back.
